13 Spooky Stories to Read With Your Children

In looking for some Halloween stories for the upcoming holiday I have come across a lot of stories what are not necessarily Halloween, but are perfect spooky stories to read with your kids around this holiday.

Today I am sharing my top 13 Spooky Stories to read with your child.

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson- I found this story this year and it is one of my absolute favorites! I love the rhymes and the fun storyline. My two year old does get a little nervous when the mud monster enters the picture, but then we figure out who it is all is well!

The Witch Next Door by Norman Bridwell- This is one of my favorite books from childhood. I remember reading it as a little girl and loving it. It was fun to find it at the library and share it with my little one.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda D. Williams- I love Linda D. Williams and this is such a fun book perfect for this Halloween Season.

The Fierce Yellow Pumpkin by Margaret Wise Brown- This is a new to me story but it is really the perfect spooky story to read in the fall.

What Was I Scared Of? by Dr. Seuss- Whenever I read a story to my daughter and it is by Dr. Seuss she can recognize his name on the front cover. I will read the title and she will always say “By Dr. Seuss” in her little two year old voice. It is the cutest. I love this story by Dr. Seuss. It is purely a spooky story but has a great resolution at the end.

The Dark by Lemony Snicket- I did not know Lemony Snicket wrote children’s books. I love A Series of Unfortunate Events and the All the Wrong Questions Series, so when I saw this children’s book I needed to read it. It is about children’s fears of the dark, so it is a little spooky, but like many spooky stories it all resolves in the end.

Ghosts in the House by Kazuno Kohara- The illustrations and fun story make this book so great. This new to me story is one I will get year after year.

Bone Dog by Eric Rohmann- I also loved this story about a bone dog that comes to the rescue of his boy on Halloween night.

Leo: A Ghost Story by Mac Barnett- I thought this story was really cute. I liked following little Leo and his troubles as a Ghost.

The Widow’s Broom by Chris Van Allsburg- This one is quite spooky to me, but I thought the story was great. It reminds me of the spooky stories my parents or aunts use to tell us at night when we would have cousin sleepovers at Grandmas.

Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds- This is a really silly spooky story, perfect for kids that might be a little sensitive to monsters or ghosts.

My Monster Mama Loves Me So by Laura Leuck- This cute book about a Mama Monster and her child is a great read. It is endearing and parallels the love that moms have for their children.

Frank Was a Monster that Wanted to Dance by Keith Graves- I thought this story was so cute and funny, but when I read it to my daughter she was really nervous about the whole thing. Maybe next year, because I loved it!
